Session 1:  Accelerating Growth By Marketing How You’re Different (Instead Of Better)

When marketing to prospective clients, many firms try to show how they are ‘better’ than other firms, for example by their status as a fiduciary, fee-only advisor offering comprehensive planning services. While these can be important characteristics, they are not necessarily the differentiators they once were, with even the largest asset managers adopting similar language in their marketing. In this session, we discuss how advisors can focus on what makes them different, instead of the slippery slope of forever trying to be better in an increasingly competitive advisor landscape. Leveraging Kitces Research data and real-world examples from advisory firms, we explore how advisors can decide what makes them different and options for how they can communicate their unique value proposition on their websites to show why they are the best advisor for their ideal target client.

Session 2: “Helping Nervous Clients Understand And Financially Plan For The (True) State Of The Social Security System.”

Given frequent news headlines on the (un)sustainability of the Social Security system, many working-age financial advisory clients might harbor doubts about receiving their full (or any of their) estimated Social Security benefits. In this session, we dive deep into data from the Social Security Board Of Trustees’ Annual Report to clear up common misconceptions about the actual health of the Social Security system, review a range of policy options being considered to shore up Social Security for the rest of the century, and discuss how financial advisors can analyze the impact of these policies for both working-age, near-retirement, and already-retired clients, and ways to adapt financial planning assumptions to model the scenarios, providing clients with a more accurate picture of how they might (or might not) be affected.

Presenter:
Adam Van Deusen, CFP®, is the Associate Financial Planning Nerd at Kitces.comwhere he writes on practice management and technical topics for the Nerd's Eye View blog, with a particular interest in how advisors can show their ongoing value to prospective and current clients. In addition to hosting live events on the Kitces platform, Adam writes the popular weekly Weekend Reading For Financial Planners. His work has appeared in the Investments & Wealth Monitor and TheStreet, among other publications.

Adam previously worked at a financial planning firm in the Washington, D.C., area and as a journalist covering the banking and insurance industries. In addition to his work with Kitces.com, he serves as a volunteer financial planner and financial literacy class instructor for local non-profits.

Presenter:  Joseph R. Tiano Jr., Esq. is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Legal Decoder, Inc.
After practicing law for nearly 20 years, Joe founded Legal Decoder because he saw that clients and their law firms lacked the analytic tools and data to effectively price and manage the cost of legal services delivered by outside counsel. Joe set out to build an intelligent, data driven technology company that would revolutionize the way that legal services from outside counsel are priced and economically evaluated. Legal Decoder’s data analytics technology is used in law firms of all sizes from AmLaw 50 law firms to boutique firms; in Fortune 500 legal departments; and in major lawsuits and Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases (PG&E, Purdue Pharma, Toys R Us, Rite Aid and others) where legal fees are scrutinized.

Joe is a prolific author having (co-)authored ten law review articles published in scholarly journals. In addition, he has written articles for countless blogs and other online media on substantive legal issues and the legal industry in general. He regularly presents at CLEs and other seminars and courses on topics ranging from artificial intelligence, LegalTech, legal data analytics to legal ethics and legal malpractice.

Joe is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Arizona State University Sandra Day O'Connor Law School currently teaching a course on Artificial Intelligence & Legal Ethics to 2L and 3L students.

Previously, Joe was a Partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, LLP and Thelen LLP where he grew and managed all aspects of a multi-million-dollar cross-border finance practice. Entrepreneurship runs through Joe’s veins since his early days as a venture capital lawyer representing transformative technology companies, like Blackboard Inc., and many of the outgrowths of Blackboard (WeddingWire/The Knot, Presidium, Starfish Retention Solutions and others).
Joe graduated from Georgetown University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and received his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1995.
